The air brake systems on certain Hino trucks are highly reliable, but they still require a minimum amount of upkeep!

Dr. Hino shares a few tips and tricks to help you plan your air brake system maintenance and reduce downtime caused by mechanical issues.

Drain your air tanks once a day! With temperature changes and airborne particles, water can build up inside your tanks. Even though the Hino system is equipped with an air dryer, making this a habit will help reduce premature wear on certain components.

Hino recommends checking your brakes at every service without exception! This helps you anticipate upcoming costs, reduces accident risk, and minimizes downtime.

Dr. Hino recommends using genuine Hino parts for optimal performance. Their superior heat resistance, longer lifespan, and design tailored to our models truly make a big difference!

Recommendation: Drain the tanks once a day

What does a valve adjustment involve? A valve adjustment ensures that the rocker arms allow the engine valves to open and close properly. If clearance develops between the rocker arms and the valves, the combustion cycle won't function as it should.

What can poor valve adjustment cause? If the intake valves don't open fully, there will be a lack of air in the engine and therefore a loss of power. This can also cause abnormally high diesel consumption.

Abnormal ticking from the cylinder head may be a sign that your valves need to be adjusted. We advise you not to wait for the ticking and to follow the recommended intervals.

An engine drive belt powers critical engine components such as the water pump and alternator. It's therefore essential to inspect it regularly to avoid problems.

A broken belt can cause a battery failure or engine overheating if the water pump stops working. If a simple inspection can prevent all that, why not take the time?

Recommendation: 60,000 km / 24 months

The engine air filter removes and filters all harmful particles or contaminants that could enter your engine. A heavily soiled air filter that isn't replaced regularly can cause a loss of power, increased fuel consumption, smoke from the exhaust, and even unusual engine noises.

Imagine the damage that excessive debris entering your engine could cause, simply because your air filter wasn't replaced. The consequences could be enormous.

What is a VNT? A VNT is a turbocharger component also known as a "Variable Nozzle Turbocharger." The VNT adjusts the turbo response time (turbo lag) according to engine RPM. It allows the turbo to deliver maximum boost even at low RPM.

By understanding the VNT's purpose, we realize that simply lubricating this system is essential to prevent the VNT shaft from seizing and causing engine failure. When you service your truck at Laval Hino, our technicians make sure to lubricate it properly at every maintenance.

Recommendation: At every lubrication service or oil change (max 6 months)

Every summer, we have customers complaining that their truck overheats on the highway. The main reason for this overheating is a very dirty or poorly cleaned radiator.

The radiator's role is to allow engine coolant to cool down using airflow generated by the engine fan or the truck's motion. An airflow forms between the air-to-air cooler and the radiator. This airflow drags particles, pollen, and dust to stick to the radiator fins. Once the fins are clogged, air can no longer pass through properly, which prevents the engine coolant from being cooled.

Recommendation: Every 6 months (or sooner in dusty environments)

When Dr. Hino recommends checking your brake fluid level during your safety inspection, it's not just to know how much is left. The level doesn't only drop when there's a leak.

The more worn your brakes are, the further the caliper pistons push outward, which lowers the fluid reservoir level to fill that gap. Noticing a very low brake fluid level often indicates that the brakes are worn and need to be replaced.

Bad brake fluid can affect braking system components, cause leaks, and contaminate the system. Both can lead to a dangerous driving situation if the brakes fail.

Recommendation: 80,000 km / 24 months — Inspect every morning

What is a CCV filter? It's the crankcase ventilation filter. It filters and collects all oil vapors that may form inside the engine.

Why replace it frequently? Oil builds up and the filter becomes saturated. Once full, vapors can no longer accumulate and pressure builds up inside the engine. This pressure is very harmful as it can cause leaks at the seals. Additionally, replacing the CCV filter helps reduce the risk of premature failure of the turbo, EGR valve, and DPR filter.

Recommendation: Hino 155/195: 100,000 km / 12 months — Hino 185 to 358: 20,000 km / 6 months

A fuel filter removes as many impurities as possible from the fuel tank and lines. It ensures the quality of the fuel reaching your engine and helps extend your truck's lifespan.

A fuel filter that isn't replaced according to recommended intervals can damage the injection and emissions systems over the long term and may also reduce engine performance.

Recommendation: Hino 155/195: 20,000 km / 6 months — Hino 185 to 358: 20,000 km / 6 months

All our Hino 155, 195, and some 185 trucks are equipped with an Aisin A450 transmission. The manufacturer recommends replacing the transmission fluid every 40,000 km or every 48 months.

A transmission is a set of gears and clutches that work together to transmit engine rotation to your truck's wheels. It's therefore a critical component of your work tool!

Worn transmission fluid doesn't lubricate the gears properly, which can cause serious problems with the internal components and result in a breakdown that prevents the truck from moving.

Recommendation: Hino 155/195 and some 185s: 40,000 km / 48 months

Why should wheels be re-torqued after a tire replacement?

Over-tightening is just as harmful as under-tightening. Over-tightening can stretch the wheel stud threads, which could shear and cause a wheel to come off. Under-tightening can cause abnormal vibration that could also result in losing a wheel.

This service is free at Laval Hino!

Recommendation: After 150 km, every time a wheel is removed and reinstalled

At Laval Hino, we don't just care about your truck — we want every customer to be comfortable in their Hino. A simple hour-and-a-half check is nothing to ensure your well-being!

Don't forget that the windshield defrost system needs dry air to do its job properly.

Recommendation: Once a year

The power steering system makes turning the steering wheel easier without having to force it. It's therefore a key component of your truck's proper operation.

It's important to replace the fluid every 60,000 km or 2 years. Over time, debris and metal particles accumulate in the fluid and could prematurely damage power steering components such as the pump or seals.

Recommendation: 60,000 km / 24 months
